How to have a Happy Life

A Guide To:

Overcoming Depression
The Six Secrets of Mental Health

About This Blog

Stained glass, jewelry made of gems– rubies, sapphires, opals of every color; paintings of  flowers exploding from a vase in a riot of reds and yellows, of wind teased trees, their leaves littering the ground; two chestnut mares, one pure black stallion, hens pecking in the dry dirt of a hot summer day when time itself seems to thicken and slow, all this and more, much more comprises my life of fifty six years. My blog is the repository for that life and its teaching moments. I was diagnosed with severe treatment resistant depression twenty some years ago and lived in institutions, unable to care for myself. My blog traces the trajectory I followed from hopeless mental patient to accomplished writer (ten published books( and an 11th oin the way) and artist of many forms. My blog is the breadcrumb path you can follow if you, too, are have been in a darkness so dense it  was impossible to claw through, a depression that seemed to stop time entirely, the seconds stuck while you flailed about with some huge and horrible hook sunk in your jaw, caught and captured by a beast with no face and no name. Or perhaps your depression is not so serious. Perhaps instead you live with a low level thrum of discontent, your life feeling flat and frayed. Perhaps sometimes you wonder if “this” is all there is (I can tell you that it isn’t); my blog addresses all of these scenarios, all these states of mind as it tells the tale of one woman’s true triumph over profound pain that. lasted for over two decades. With the help of a medication regime that has failed me more times than I can count I have nevertheless learned how to not only survive but to thrive, even when all the chips were down. In my story I hope you find your own breadcrumb path out of the fairytale forest; I hope you learn to do as I did, enacting the six attributes, the six secrets to having a happy life. None of them are easy, none of them are get rich quick schemes. All of them require staying power and an enormous act of will but I believe  it is worth it, this investment in your life that I am implicitly (and now explicitly) asking you to make. Follow me back in time to windows with heavy mesh screens and the tell-tale bars; follow me forward as I slowly shed my symptoms and begin to compose a guide, a map, describing a pathway out of pain.

About Me

I am a fifty six year old author, writing and publishing coach. I have penned and published ten books translated into 24 languages. In 2016 I bought an 80 acre farm in the troubled mill city of Fitchburg, Massachusetts and I turned two barns into a single house I now live in with my three horses and my adorable dog, Memphis, a Shiba Inu with a copper coat and curled tail, a sweet and moist muzzle he likes to press against my face when I return home each evening. Fitchburg is now my home, with all its pros and all its cons. I live on a high hill and from my bedroom window can see Mount Wachusett festooned with lights for late night skiers who whizz down its slopes with pure confidence…
